Fun fact: Espresso machines were not invented to automate to the production of espressos. Espresso was invented due to the machine being invented, first.
Technical fact: Espresso is essentially just a stronger coffee. The only way to produce a stronger coffee is to brew it with as little water as possible, yielding what is basically a concentrated coffee. The machine was invented to supply 15 psi of pressure to be able to force that small amount of water through the tightly packed ground coffee. This… is what makes a ‘proper’ espresso.
So, how do you make espresso with $3???????
A Moka pot is an Italian, traditional coffee device that closely replicate an espresso without a machine. Its mechanism is simple: the water basin is heated – steam is then produced and goes through the ground coffee – the now ‘coffee steam’ is pushed upward to the ‘pipe’ and reaches the pipe opening on top – the upper body of the Moka pot then catches the liquid. Presto! now you have an espresso.
You can certainly buy a Moka pot from Value Village or any other community supply stores for under $3!!!
I bought my first Moka Pot for $2.77, and it gets the job done as well as my new Moka pot that I bought for $40!
Try it out!
Espresso popular-belief fact: A real/good espresso must show CREMA, the foam that forms on top of your espresso. (Below picture for example).
